Book The Surrogate Mother: An addictive psychological thriller you won't be able to put down Review :

Dr. Frieda McFadden is a remarkable woman-a doctor, wife, mother, and author. I’m in the process of reading all of her novels. She writes especially great medical books, and as an RN, I love those. But she also writes outside that genre, and this is one of her suspense novels. Abigail is a corporate career woman with a high-power job, but she yearns to have a child. After years of trying, fertility injections, etc., she and her husband are left with only the option to adopt. Abby desperately wants an infant. She and her husband Sam are awaiting the birth of their adoptive child, when Abby finds out that the mother has decided to keep the baby. She is devastated. Then, her assistant, Monica, states that she wants to be a surrogate for Sam and Abby’s baby! Because Abby’s eggs are too old, she cannot contribute. Against the wishes of everyone, including her husband, Abby goes through with this plan. The sperm is Sam’s, the egg is Monica’s. In exchange for the baby, the couple will pay for Monica’s further schooling. Things go well for a brief time until Abby discovers that Monica may have more in mind than just being a surrogate. And Sam falls in love with HIS baby, and maybe with Monica, too? The ending is quite a surprise.
The main character in this page-turner experiences the kind of erosion of optimism that most of us have probably encountered and can identify with, but Abby experiences a dire version of it. It’s the niggling worry that certain people have misrepresented themselves to us. But we too often sweep aside our early misgivings, saying to ourselves, “Nah, can’t be. They’re OK.” We fail to heed the talk show host’s advice: When someone tells you who they are, believe them.”That’s the kind of mistake Abby makes when she initially excuses too many of the worrisome statements issuing from the woman she and her husband have selected to be a surrogate mother for them. When the seemingly ideal surrogate’s pronouns slide from being “Your baby” to being “Our baby,” and then to “My baby,” Abby feels a twinge of concern. But she dismisses it. She justifies the pronoun as being an understandable usage in the context of the doctor’s office. And therein lies the trouble.I encountered just a few minor stumbling blocks as I read along here. Abby (and by extension perhaps author McFadden herself) seems to put too much stock in what people wear. She assesses people by whether they are wearing Armani or non-Armani. This attitude made me like Abby a bit less. Then there were too many times when Abby describes her reaction as “a punch in the gut.” I sometimes wished there was a little more variety in the descriptions of her reactions. The writing is generally straight-forward, with Abby addressing the reader in the first person. Abby’s husband Sam is a math teacher, so a few math concepts are mentioned, although no understanding of them is required. There is the occasional thought-provoking metaphor that subtly plays into some ideas that Sam might introduce in his classes. Abby says that all babies look like old men, but old men don’t look like babies. So I guess babies and old men would not fall into one of Sam’s “Abelian Groups” which require that its members be commutative. This novel has a gripping immediacy heightened by the fact that we’ve all likely been there - in one way or another.
